HAI Presents on Dangers of 5G Interference at FAA Industry Day HAI participated in the FAA’s 5G Radar Altimeter Industry Stakeholder Forum on Thursday, Jul. 1. HAI and other aviation industry stakeholders at the forum officially presented to the FAA, FCC, Department of Defense, and Department of Transportation to convey the importance of preserving the integrity of radar altimeters in aircraft. Helicopter operations are conducted at low altitudes, in congested urban environments, over mountainous terrain, and in adverse weather conditions. Operators rely on accurate and reliable radar altimeter data for air ambulance, firefighting, heavy lift, search and rescue, and countless other missions. Loss or erroneous radar altimeter data, whether detected or undetected, compromises the safety of the aircraft and puts flight crews at risk. HAI is grateful for the opportunity to educate key industry stakeholders on the severity of this issue. Members can view a copy of the presentation here. HAI extends gratitude to NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt on his retirement

HAI extends gratitude to NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt on his retirement Helicopter Association International (HAI) extends its deepest appreciation to Robert L. Sumwalt on the occasion of his retirement after nearly 15 years serving with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Sumwalt retired Jun. 30, and President Joe Biden has nominated Board Member Jennifer Homendy to become the 15th chair of the NTSB. Her nomination is pending in the US Senate. Vice Chair Bruce Landsberg will serve as acting chair until the confirmation occurs. “HAI sincerely wishes Bob all the best in his retirement,” says James Viola, president and CEO of HAI. “We have the deepest respect for his integrity, his insight, and his commitment to making transportation as safe as possible. As a pilot, as a member of the Board, and as Board chair, he has supported our work to improve safety in rotorcraft operations. We appreciate that he continuously sought to save lives through the findings and recommendations produced by the NTSB.” According to a release by the NTSB, Sumwalt came to the Board in August 2006 via his appointment as the 37th member of the organization, whereupon President George W. Epic Flight Academy Uses Frasca Motion Simulator to Train Pilots Faster June 11, 2021 Frasca International and Epic Flight Academy have collaborated to create a new flight training curriculum utilizing a full motion Cessna 172 flight simulator. The curriculum has shown success in with students to earn their private pilot’s license faster than the national average of 70 hours. Students training with Epic on the Frasca motion simulator, typically finish their private pilot’s license within FAA minimum flight hours. Frasca worked closely with Epic to develop a device for their training aircraft that would not only simulate the aircraft instruments and controls, but would add enhanced training value of motion utilizing Frasca’s Motion Cueing System (MCS) which was originally designed for use in higher level Flight Training Devices (FTDs) and Full Flight Simulators (FTDs). “Epic is the first flight school in the world to have a Cessna 172 FTD with this high level of motion system. They are leading the way in flight training by providing this very high fidelity device for their students,” stated John Frasca, President of Frasca International, Inc.
