HAI extends gratitude to NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt on his retirement Helicopter Association International (HAI) extends its deepest appreciation to Robert L. Sumwalt on the occasion of his retirement after nearly 15 years serving with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Sumwalt retired Jun. 30, and President Joe Biden has nominated Board Member Jennifer Homendy to become the 15th chair of the NTSB. Her nomination is pending in the US Senate. Vice Chair Bruce Landsberg will serve as acting chair until the confirmation occurs. “HAI sincerely wishes Bob all the best in his retirement,” says James Viola, president and CEO of HAI. “We have the deepest respect for his integrity, his insight, and his commitment to making transportation as safe as possible. As a pilot, as a member of the Board, and as Board chair, he has supported our work to improve safety in rotorcraft operations. We appreciate that he continuously sought to save lives through the findings and recommendations produced by the NTSB.” According to a release by the NTSB, Sumwalt came to the Board in August 2006 via his appointment as the 37th member of the organization, whereupon President George W.
